Measuring the performance of asynchronous systems with PAFAS

چکیده
Based on PAFAS (Process Algebra for Faster Asynchronous Systems), a testing-based fasterthan relation has previously been developed that compares the worst-case efficiency of asynchronous systems. This approach reveals that pipelining does not improve efficiency in general; that it does so in practice depends on assumptions about the user behaviour. As a case study for testing under such assumptions, we adapt the PAFAS-approach to a setting where user behaviour is known to belong to a specific, but often occurring class of request-response behaviours. Just as the testing preorder in classical testing, the original faster-than relation is qualitative. We give it a quantitative reformulation for the general approach; based on this, we demonstrate in our case study how to determine an asymptotic performance measure for finite-state processes. With this result, we can show that pipelining indeed improves efficiency in our setting, and we discuss additional examples.

Evaluating the Efficiency of Asynchronous Systems with FASE
In this paper, we present FASE (Faster Asynchronous Systems Evaluation), a tool for evaluating the worst-case efficiency of asynchronous systems. The tool is based on some well-established results in the setting of a timed process algebra (PAFAS: a Process Algebra for Faster Asynchronous Systems). To show the applicability of FASE to concrete meaningful examples, we consider three implementatio...

In this paper we present FASE (Fast Asynchronous Systems Evaluation), a tool for evaluating worst-case efficiency of asynchronous systems. This tool implements some well-established results in the setting of a timed CCS-like process algebra: PAFAS (a Process Algebra for Faster Asynchronous Systems). Moreover, we discuss some new solutions that are useful to improve the applicability of FASE to ...
متن کاملBit Error Performance for Asynchronous Ds Cdma Systems Over Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channels (RESEARCH NOTE)
In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of CDMA in mobile communications. Bit error rate is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of CDMA systems. In this paper, we develop a technique to find an accurate approximation to the probability of bit error for asynchronous direct–sequence code division multiple–access (DS/CDMA) systems by modeling the multipl...
متن کاملPAFAS at Work: Comparing the Worst-Case Efficiency of Three Buffer Implementations
In this paper, we use PAFAS (Process Algebra for Faster Asynchronous Systems) to compare the worst-case efficiency of three bounded-buffer implementations: Fifo, Pipe and Buff. Fifo implements the buffer as a first-in-first-out queue, Pipe implements the buffer as a pipeline queue and Buff implements the buffer as circular queue in an array. We contrast our results with those in [2] and [10] wh...

PAFAS (Process Algebra for Faster Asynchronous Systems) is a process algebra where actions are assumed to occur within a given time bound, which for simplicity is taken to be 1. A testing-based faster-than relation is presented that compares asynchronous systems according to their worst-case eÆciency [4,3]. Main results are: the resulting pre-order based on the more realistic real-valued time i...
